There chains are gold-filled and given an additional gold plating after they’re made to create a more uniform color and finish.

My pendants are made from genuine 14/20 gold-filled material, but I do not plate them afterward. The gold you see on my pieces is the actual 14k gold layer that is permanently bonded to the base metal. Because mine aren’t additionally plated, the color or finish can look slightly different from commercially made gold-filled chair, even though both are genuine gold-filled. The plating will tone down over time and match the pendant much better.
